Breaking the Law to Enforce the Law

Lubbock police reportedly breaking the law to enforce the law? Unfortunately, I’m not surprised. According to a story published in the Lubbock Avalanche Journal and written by former Tech imPressions News Central student, Logan Carver, local attorneys are saying police are not adhering to student’s constitutional rights while they try to combat underage drinking in the city.

Many Tech students will vouch that Lubbock residents often don’t like students living in their community. With late night parties, loud music and empty beer cans in the lawn and street the next morning, they don’t want irresponsible college students as their neighbors. I always assumed it was these unhappyLubbock inhabitants who are calling the police every weekend to have the house party next door busted, but as this fall semester comes to an end, I also believe the police are out looking for the parties where they can distribute as many infractions to minors as possible.  (more…)

We Are “Millennials”

Add comment November 13th, 2007 03:40pm ccamero

Listen up students of Texas Tech University! We are MILLENNIALS. We are the group of children born between 1980 and 1995. There’s 80 million of us millennials and as the semester comes to end, Tech’s December grads are just another group of millennials looking to take over the jobs of the baby boomers. At least this is what I heard on a recent episode of 60 minutes.

According to this story, “The ‘Millennials’ Are Coming”, we are a group of young adults that were raised by doting parents who told us that we are special. We played in little leagues with no winners or losers. We got trophies just for participating and we were told that we can be anything we want to be when we grow up. (more…)

Fires in California

Add comment October 30th, 2007 09:30pm ccamero

The fires last week in California left thousands without their homes and many leaving behind everything they own to flee for their safety. Not only were the fires the top story on every national newscast, they covered entertainment news channels because of the celebrities that were being affected.

Although I was born in raised in Texas, every other member from my immediate and extended family grew up and almost all still live in California. My parents grew up in LA and after 30 years, they moved because of my dad’s job.

All of last week, I was bothered by comments made on TV, the radio and discussions in my classes. Most people’s opinion seemed to be that the fires were devastating, but since it was “all rich people that live in Malibu”, they should have no problem leaving their house, and building another one somewhere else. I don’t know if this is surprising to some people, but not all people that live in Malibu are rich and famous. (more…)

“Nappy Headed Ho’s” Just another stereotype

Add comment April 11th, 2007 09:51am erin myrick

As a female basketball player, I was amazed at all of the stereotypes that were waiting for me when I came to college. I can remember approaching two guys who played football outside of the student union with one of my teammates. I was finally tired of people whispering behind my back. “Do you think I’m a lesbian!?” He stuttered for a minute before saying no…I knew he was lying. I was saddened that someone I didn’t even know, could think something like that about me. I was never questioned in high school. It could have been the fact that I wore ribbons in my hair and make-up on my face, but this was the first time in my life where I felt powerless about what people thought and said about me.

I’m not a fool; I know what people think about women basketball players. To experience the stereotype personally was a different situation. What Don Imus said about the Rutgers Women’s basketball team was plain ignorant. He looked at a team with dark-skinned girls with tattoos on their arms and automatically assumed that they were nappy headed and that they were ho’s. First of all, I can name quite a few light skinned girls with some nappy heads. Because Tennessee’s team had an overall lighter skin tone, he assumed they were cute.

It’s really sad to see how the thoughts and opinions of others can affect you. It possessed me to run up to guys I didn’t even know in the middle of the student union. As a Lady Raider I know that we pride ourselves on dressing and acting like ladies. This obviously didn’t help our basketball season turn out any better than it did. How people look has nothing to do with the type of person they are. What they can do on the court, what they can do in the classroom, and what they can do in the community. Surely everyone knows this right? Just when you think we’re getting the point, Don Imus introduces himself to the world.

Lady Raiders end this season looking forward to the next

Season is over and has been for about two weeks now. This season was a repeat of last year and our hopes for going to the NCAA tournament were shot down. If any of you have ever played sports then you know how much it hurts to work so hard for something and continually come up short. Right now as a team all we can do is get right back up and continue practicing. So…my abs are sore, my legs feel like jello and I have black circles around my eyes because once again it’s the offseason. I would just like to take the time and apologize to all of our fans and the entire community. We have not lived up to our responsibilities as Lady Raiders.

The offseason consist of running and lifting weights with a strength and conditioning coach, and workouts on the court with the team. Now is the time where we attempt to catch up on any school that we may have missed and try to work toward another year. This will be last post about the Lady Raiders unless anything should happen to come up. Thanks for reading!

Why experience matters more than the classroom

When I applied for the Sports Editor position at The Daily Toreador late last spring, I had no idea then how great of a decision that would turn out to be. Having been in Oklahoma City since Monday for the Big 12 Men’s and Women’s basketball tournaments has been one of the greater experiences in my life. Not only have I missed a week of school, but that has been my largest gain. I have had conversations with many journalists around the country who cover the Big 12, including beat writers from (more…)

No support for student experience…

As some of you know, I recently took up as writing position with Study Breaks, the popular college magazine distributed here in Lubbock as well as numerous other college towns across the state. Once I heard Ron Jeremy was coming to town at the invitation of the Tech Activities Board, I pitched the article idea to my editor, hoping to do a profile on him.

Well, there’s always people you have to go through. When I asked the Tech Activities Board secretary if there were any way I could arrange an interview with him I received a reply that was not hopeful.

So I went to the source. In a few moments googling ‘Ron Jeremy Porn Debate’ I came up with (more…)

Adjusting to America

It has been about two and a half years since I moved from Germany to Texas due to my husband’s (then fiancé’s) education. This is not my first time in the United States. I visited the country as a tourist several times, and even lived in Pennsylvania for nine months. Therefore, I did not expect a culture shock. But I am still getting used to life in Texas.

The other day I came walking down the stairs when somebody ran upstairs, throwing a quick (more…)

What we don’t know could help us

This week, my news team and I wrote a series of stories on financial help for students. My story was about an organization I had barely heard of -the Red to Black association.
I was impressed with the information I found while researching the organization. Red to Black is a group of Personal Financial Planning majors who counsel students one-on-one about all kinds of financial matters. Not only do they work to help students with basic things (more…)

We must protect the sanctity of marriage!

I have had the urge to write this for over year, but have not had the channel through which to accomplish it. Feel free to comment and hopefully you can understand my deranged way of getting my point across.

I am hereby proposing a constitutional ban on left-handed marriage. God said that marriage is for two right-handed people only. When I see left-handed people, it makes me sick - parading about, doing things that only right-handed people should be allowed to do; such as (more…)
